Web 2.0 tools

.Web 2.0 tools are Internet sites that allow users to store, edit, and share their information. Other users can see, edit, and/or comment on the content depending on the permissions given. They are usually free of charge to educators and/or students. Some charge for an upgrade in services. Below are some examples that I've listed for one of my MTT classes.

Below is a short video with some ideas for Web 2.0 in the classroom.

Fit Day http://fitday.com/ An online site to track food intake, calories and weight loss. Basic membership is free.
Sparkpeople   www.sparkpeople.com    I must admit that I had forgotten all about this one until I saw it on Manrique's list. I had to include this excellent resource. I lost over 40 lbs using this in 2007. Unfortunately, I stopped and gained it all back. Track food intake, exercise, set goals, join message boards, journal, etc.

Photo Creation and/or Sharing

Name  Web address  Description
Big Huge Labs http://bighugelabs.com/ Upload photo and "do things" with it. Many creative options.  Below is a "magazine cover" that I created at Big Huge Labs.

Virtual Bulletin Boards

Name  Web address  Description
Linoit   http://en.linoit.com/  Very similar to Wallwisher, but you can approve notes before they are posted. Probably o.k. to use with fellow teachers, but I wouldn't use it with students for that reason.
Pindax   http://www.pindax.com/   1st board is free (more for one time fee of $1.95) Ad supported.
Wallwisher   http://www.wallwisher.com   Very easy to create. Teacher can approve comments before they are posted. Posted messages limited to 160 characters. See the my library Wallwisher page here: http://www.wallwisher.com/wall/SolisLibraryNews (Also chosen by jmhernandez)

Wiggio  http://wiggio.com/  Another online, interactive, multiuser sharing space

Wikis

Create your own webpage.  You control who can edit it.  Students can send you items to post, or you can allow them to post to it.  Post documents, photos, videos, presentations and more.

Name  Web address  Description
Edmodo  http://www.edmodo.com/  This doesn't call itsself a wiki, but it seems to fit here more than anywhere else. Teachers create a free account and have access to a calendar, gradebook, blog, polls, and more. It is sort of a simplified version of Blackboard. A search revealed that 2 teachers at my campus  are using it. (also chosen by jmhernandez)
PBworks  http://pbworks.com/   So far, the most versatile wiki creation site that I've seen. I've tried the others listed here, and recommend this one.
Wikia  http://www.wikia.com/Wikia   Note: "All contributions to Tinasez Wiki are considered to be released under the CC-BY-SA (see Wikia:Licensing for details)." If there is a main page with all of your wikis listed, I haven't found it. I was lucky that I remembered the name, or I never would have found it again. Also, you have very limited choice font size and no choice of color or style with a free account. I moved my list of Web 2.0 links to PBworks, because I found the choices for the table too limited.
WikiSpaces   http://www.wikispaces.com/   Free account for K-12 educators.

Word Clouds

Name  Web address  Description
Worditout  http://worditout.com/   Worditout similar to Wordle but text is horizontal only. You can order a mug or t-shirt with your word art on it.
Wordle http://www.wordle.net/   Type in words get a word picture. (also chosen by jmhernandez and Maricela Ramirez)  No login required. See my Library Wordle below.

More Information on Web 2.0 tools

Here is an article by Loren Baker from Search Engine Journal describing social bookmarks and listing 125 popular sites in alphabetical order along with a short blurb of the special features of each.

Daniel Toomey has written a short article showing some Science resources from the National Science Digital Library.

This website has a free ebook (83 p.) that describes a number of Web 2.0 tools in more detail than I have here.  Unfortunately, the pages are filled with adds, but if you are looking for something new to try out, you will find many suggestions at http://www.scribd.com/doc/45217115/Super-Book-of-Web-Tools-for-Educators

Do Web 2.0 Right, by Daniel Light is an article describing what works and what does not based on interviews with teachers using Web 2.0.

The article Enrichment 2.0, by Michelle Eckstein, describes how Web 2.0 technologies can be used to enhance the education of gifted students.

Here is another website listing a variety of Web 2.0 tools with a brief description of each.

Here is a website with an extensive list of tools catagorized by type.
